Volleyball Cougars Host WNYAC Tournament

The Genesee Community College volleyball team hosted the 2017 Western New York Athletic Conference Tournament and competed in the second pool in a best-of-three against Jamestown Community College and Mercyhurst North East.

After the Cougars dropped a close first set by four points, they rallied to tie the match at 1-1 with a 27-25 win with Nao Maeda breaking a 25-25 tie with a pair of winning serves. Genesee would drop the third set 9-15 before moving on against undefeated Jamestown.

The Cougars had a strong start and went toe-to-toe with the eventual WNYAC champion Jayhawks in the first set and held a 10-7 lead before Jamestown turned up the heat and only allowed five more Cougar points. Genesee scored 13 in its second match against the Jayhawks, who went on to beat Monroe from the other pool to claim the title, 2-1.

Prior to the start of the tournament, three Cougars were named to all-conference status in the WNYAC that included Isabella Slocum, Sha-Ony Obispa and Maeda.

Jamestown led in all-conference selections with four and also received the player of the year and coach of the year in Sally Anne Rudny and Ashley Lund, respectively.

In Pool A: Monroe defeated Niagara County 2-0 (25-11, 25-12); Erie defeated Niagara County 2-0 (25-21, 25-14); and Monroe defeated Erie CC 2-0 (26-24, 25-19) with Monroe emerging as the first pool winner and a championship game berth against the second pool winner.

In Pool B: Mercyhurst defeated Genesee 2-1 (25-21, 25-27, 15-9); Jamestown defeated Mercyhurst 2-0 (25-16, 25-19); and Jamestown defeated Genesee 2-0 (25-15, 25-13) to earn the right to face Monroe for the championship, which Jamestown took against Monroe 2-1 (21-25, 25-15, 15-9).

Named to the 2017 WNYAC All-Tournament Team was: Tara Sweeney, SallyAnne Rudny, and Kendyl Austin from JCC; while Monroe players were Tessa Engel and Andrea Green. Rounding out the squad was ECC's Sidney Schindler and Haley Pelini from Mercyhurst.
