Brianna Heers battles for a loose ball

The Genesee Community College women's soccer team opened its season with a convincing win on neutral territory with nine goals against Ocean County Community College (NJ) in the Coliseum Classic held at Herkimer College.

Four players tallied all the scoring in the first half that produced five goals and 15 points for the Cougars on their way to a 9-1 win.

Diante Scheepers and Katline Cartwright each registered five points in the first half, while Leah Czechowski and Miko Yamashita combined for another five points in the opening half.

Scheepers recorded her first collegiate hat trick with the first Cougar goal of the second half. The remaing three tallies came from Julie Kommer, Maddie Cummings and Alexa Jordan, respectively.

Scheepers finished with a team-high seven points followed by six from Cartwright. Czechowski added four and Yamashita three, as all four of the first-half point getters also added to their totals in the second half. Bri Heers rounded out the scoring for Genesee.

Jaclyn Guzdek recorded the win in the net as the team prepares to face nationally-ranked Nassau Aug. 26 to complete play at the Coliseum Classic before returning home for the team's home opener next week.
