The Genesee Community College women's basketball team could not get past visiting Cayuga Community College to start the New Year on Tuesday night, falling to the Spartans 65-42 in a game where the Cougars converted just over 23-percent of their shots from the floor.
It was even after one at 11 apiece before Cayuga went on a 19-6 run in the second quarter to take the lead into half.
Genesee was just 1-15 from 3-pt range in the opening half (3-22 in the game) and converted only eight baskets in the opening two quarters.
Cayuga stretched its lead to as much as 27 in the third quarter and forced 27 GCC turnovers en-route to the win.
Brionna Blocker led the Cougars with 18 points, 12 of which came in the second half, and nine rebounds. Tabria Howell grabbed 10 boards and scored six points, Karly Fanning added eight rebounds and six points and Thais Matté dished out a game-high five assists.
Genesee falls to 3-11 on the year and will return to action Jan. 9-10 at the Community College of Rhode Island Tournament. The Cougars will face the University of Connecticut at Avery Point on Friday at 1 p.m.
