Genesee Swept by Mercyhurst in Doubleheader

The GCC baseball team dropped both games of Friday afternoon's doubleheader to visiting Mercyhurst North East, losing game one 6-2 and falling in game two 9-2.

Genesee broke through in a scoreless game one in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Terrence-John Garcia and Immanuel Gonzalez delivered RBI hits in the frame to put the Cougars up 2-0.

Starting pitcher Thomas Pauly cruised through the first four innings, facing just one batter over the minimum with four strikeouts. Trouble struck in the fifth when the Saints scored five runs off of Pauly (zero earned) after a costly defensive error that led to five hits, including a two-run home run, and a walk.

Mercyhurst NE added an insurance run in the seventh and held off Genesee to take game one.

Joeseph DeFelice went 2 for 2 for GCC and Connor Barleben, Earl Blackmon and Nick Bauer each recorded a hit apiece.

The Cougars took the lead first again in game two when Kevin Van Dongen plated two with a bases loaded single in the second to give GCC a 2-0 lead.

The Saints responded and tied the game in the top of the third on a double that nearly left the park.

Mercyhurst NE took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fourth before Jesse Staudt and Tim Cannon did leave the park for the Saints, connecting on home runs in the fifth and six innings respectively to put the visitors in front 6-2.

The Cougars managed just five hits in game two and did not score after the second inning. Mercyhurst NE added three runs in the seventh to take game two.

Starting pitcher Casey Guary lasted five innings for Genesee and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and struck out five.

Johnathan Warne, Van Dongen, Dominic DiCureia, Eugene Ferrell and Brandon Stephens all went 1 for 3 at the plate.

Genesee (5-20) will return to action at home on Saturday in a doubleheader against Monroe CC.
