Five Earn Postseason Honors in Women's Volleyball

Five members of the Genesee Community College volleyball team were recently recognized by Region III of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) for their play throughout the 2015 season.

Freshman outside hitter Amanda Modesto (Sorocaba, Brazil) and sophomore setter Yu Shimizu (Shizuoka, Japan) were both named to the All-Region III First Team.

Modesto led GCC and was third in the region with 405 kills this year. She played in 44 matches, appearing in 130 sets and led the Cougars with 499 points and 32 blocks.

Shimizu was the team-leader in assists with 896, the fourth-best mark in all of Region III. She also led the region with 85 service aces.

Modesto and Shimizu were also named to the All-WNYAC First and Second Team, respectively, along with sophomore setter/outside hitter Kristi Knutson (Kenny Lake, AK) and sophomore outside hitter Haley White (Warsaw, NY) who were both named to the all-conference second team and sophomore middle blocker Nina DiFante (Batavia, NY) who was named to the all-conference third team.

Knutson was second on the team with 128 assists and third in kills with 154. She totaled 235.5 points and had 74 service aces this season.

White was the team-leader in digs with 333, an average of 2.97 per set. She finished the year with 30 kills and 19 service aces.

DiFante was second on the team in kills with 195, points with 241, and blocks with 19. She added 10 service aces and seven digs.

Genesee finished runner-up in both the WNYAC and Region III. The Cougars ended the season with a 34-9-2 overall record.
