Genesee Falls to Monroe in Regional Championship Match

SANBORN, NY: Sunday marked the end of the 2015 season for the GCC volleyball team after the Cougars fell to Monroe CC in the Region III Division III title match, 3-0.

Genesee advanced out of pool play on Saturday with a perfect 3-0 record. The Cougars defeated Fulton Montgomery CC (3-0), Onondaga CC (2-1) and Jefferson CC (3-0) to advance to the semifinals on Sunday.

The Cougars met Jamestown CC in the semifinals on Sunday morning and cruised to a 3-0 win (25-20, 25-14, 25-15). GCC rebounded from an early 4-0 hole in the first game and took 12 out of 15 points midway through to run away with the first set. The Cougars never trailed in the second set and won game three going away.

Amanda Modesto led the way with 17 kills, Asuka Taguchi added nine digs and five kills, Kristi Knutson finished with seven kills and seven digs and Haley White added eight digs.

In the finals, GCC and MCC went point-for-point in the opening game before the Tribunes took five out of seven points to extend an 18-17 lead to 23-19. MCC won the first set 25-21 and did not trail in either of the final games, winning 25-13 and 25-11 to capture the regional title.

Modesto had nine kills in the championship match, White and Yu Shimizu each added eight digs and Taguchi finished with seven digs and four kills.

Modesto and White were both named to the all-tournament team for Genesee, which finishes the season with a 34-10-2 overall record.
