The Genesee Community College volleyball team finished in second place in the 2015 Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) tournament on Saturday afternoon, falling in the finals to Monroe CC.
Genesee, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, began the day with a straight sets win over No. 6 Niagara County CC, beating the Thunderwolves 2-0 (25-15, 25-18).
The Cougars advanced to the finals with a win over No. 2 Jamestown CC in their second match, beating the Jayhawks 2-1. GCC lost the first set 25-20, but rebounded to win the final two games of the best-of-three match, 25-22 and 15-8.
Genesee held a lead as large as six in the first set of the finals against the No. 1 seed and host team, but lost 12 of the final 16 points and fell in the first set, 25-23. The Tribunes put away GCC in the second set 25-19 to capture the conference title.
Yu Shimizu finished the tournament with 41 assists and 15 kills, Kristi Knutson added 24 assists and 12 kills, Haley White tallied 24 digs, Amanda Modesto added 18 kills and Nina DiFante finished with 13 kills. Shimizu and Modesto were both named to the WNYAC All-Tournament Team.
Genesee will now move on to the Region III Division III tournament as the No. 2 seed. The tournament will take place Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Niagara County CC.
