The Genesee Community College volleyball team will take aim at a pair of postseason titles as the Cougars prepare to play for the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) and Region III championships, beginning on Oct. 24.
The WNYAC title will be up for grabs on Oct. 24 at host site Monroe CC. Genesee is the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will open with Niagara County CC, a team it won a pair of matches against this fall. Monroe CC is the No. 1 seed, Jamestown CC No. 2, Mercyhurst North East No. 4, Erie CC No. 5 and Niagara County CC No. 6. All matches are best-of-three and action begins at 11 a.m.
The Region III Division III Championships will take place Oct. 31- Nov. 1 at Niagara County CC. Genesee has earned the overall No. 2 seed and will play in Pool B, along with No. 3 Jefferson CC, No. 6 Onondaga CC and No. 7 Fulton Montgomery CC. Pool A includes No. 1 Monroe CC, No. 4 Jamestown CC, No. 5 Corning CC and No. 8 Finger Lakes CC. Pool play will take place on Oct. 31 and all matches are best-of-three. Semifinals and finals will take place on Nov. 1 and matches will be best-of-five. Tournament matchups and start times are yet to be announced.
Genesee finished the regular season with a 28-7-2 overall record and was 17-1 in regional play. Currently receiving votes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Poll, the Cougars have won their last five matches and eight out of their last nine.
GCC will look to keep a streak of 19-consecutive seasons with a regional title going. The Cougars won the Region III Division II title in each of the past 19 seasons, but made the switch to Division III before the beginning of this season.
