A switch to Division III and first year head coach Dan Miranda highlight the start of the 2015 season for the Genesee Community College volleyball team, which has three home dates including a POD play event scheduled for this fall.
Miranda was named head coach of the program in March and a drop in division will end a run of 19 consecutive Region III Division II titles for the Cougars.
GCC begins its schedule at the Finger Lakes CC tournament on Aug. 29 and will travel the following weekend to Scranton, PA to participate in the Lackawanna College tournament Sep. 5-6. The Cougars will host Erie CC in their home opener on Sep. 10 at 6 p.m. before four straight road matches, including stops at Columbia-Greene CC (POD match) on Sep. 12, Jamestown CC (Sep. 15), Monroe CC (POD match) on Sep. 19 and a single match against Monroe CC on Sep. 24. Genesee will end the month of September hosting its own POD match on the 26th.
A road match against former Region III Division II rival Mercyhurst North East is scheduled for Oct. 1 before a POD play match at Mohawk Valley CC on Oct. 3. GCC then travels to Onondaga CC for a tournament on Oct. 9-10 before returning home on the 13th to host Niagara County CC. The Cougars will close out the regular season on the road with visits to Finger Lakes CC for a single match on Oct. 15 and a POD match on the 17th.
The postseason schedule begins on Oct. 24 at Monroe CC, the host site of the Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) tournament. Regional playoffs are set for Oct. 31 – Nov. 1 at Niagara County CC and the NJCAA National Tournament will run Nov. 13-14 in Rochester, MN.
Genesee finished the 2014 season 24-21 and won the Region III Division II title, District L title and returned to the NJCAA National Tournament for the first time since 2011.
