Cougars Finish 2nd at WNYAC Tournament

The Genesee Community College women's volleyball team finished runner-up at the 2014 Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) tournament, held on Saturday at Mercyhurst North East.

The Cougars cruised through their opening-round match against Erie Community College, downing the Kats 2-0 (25-8, 25-16).

Ai Miyazaki had 11 digs, six aces and four kills, Stephanie Toledo added six digs, six kills and one ace and Kelsey Wright finished with five kills and one ace.

In the semifinals, GCC defeated Jamestown Community College, 2-1 (22-25, 25-20, 15-7).

Nohema Garcia Torres had 19 assists and three kills, Toledo added nine digs and eight kills and Wright finished with six kills.

In the championship match, Genesee lost to Monroe Community College in two sets (16-25, 21-25).

Miyazaki led the way with 15 digs, two kills and two aces, Wright tallied seven kills and Toledo added four kills.

Haley Case and Wright were named to the All-Tournament team for GCC.

Genesee (23-18) will host the District L championship on Nov. 8-9. Opponent and match time(s) to be announced.
