In the first of two scheduled regular season matchups this fall, the Genesee Community College volleyball team will host Mercyhurst North East in its home opener on Tuesday night at the Anthony T. Zambito Gymnasium.
Genesee has stumbled out of the gate, going 1-9 in its first 10 matches this fall. The Cougars have dropped their last nine contests.
Mercyhurst North East has split a pair of matches and is 1-1 on the season. The Saints begin a four-date road trip on Tuesday.
Last time out:
Genesee fell to St. Clair Community College in its final match of the Owens Community College tournament on Aug. 31. The Cougars lost in five sets (23-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-19, 14-16). Ai Miyazaki finished the match with 18 digs and 11 kills, Stephanie Toledo tallied 16 digs and 12 kills and Yu Shimizu added 28 assists and 11 digs. GCC left the OCC tournament 0-6.
Mercyhurst N.E. shut out Butler County Community College 3-0 at home (25-18, 25-23, 26-24) on Sep. 6. MAckenzie Turner totaled 34 assists and 15 digs, Cierra Jackson added 15 kills and 14 digs and Tamia Puckett had 16 digs.
What to watch for:
Genesee has not lost to Mercyhurst N.E. since the 2005 season. The Cougars are 27-1 vs. the Saints since 2005.
GCC and MNE represent the only two Division II Region III volleyball teams. Genesee has won the Division II Region III title in each of the last 18 seasons.
The Cougars were 4-2 at home last season.
