Toms River, NJ: The No. 2 Genesee Community College women's soccer team could not get past No. 4 Herkimer County Community College in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament quarter-finals on Thursday afternoon, falling 3-2 and ending its hopes of a national title.
Kayla Doyle ended nearly 40-minutes of scoreless play with a goal late in the first half to put the Cougars in front 1-0.
Doyle struck again nine-minutes into the second half, netting a goal from just outside the box that was set up by Ashley Makowski and GCC had a 2-0 advantage.
Genesee outshot Herkimer 18-9 in the match, but the Generals scored back-to-back goals in the 58th and 60th minutes to quickly notch the game at two apiece.
The Cougars held possession in the Herkimer end much of the way through the final half, but could not find the back of the net.
HCCC cashed in the eventual game-winner with 3:39 to play and held on to advance to the national semifinals, knocking GCC out of the running for a national championship.
Genesee (15-4) will return to action on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the consolation round. GCC will play Ocean County College (NJ).
