Making its third National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament appearance in school history, the Genesee Community College women's soccer team will begin its quest for a national title in the quarter-finals of the 2014 Women's Soccer Championships on Thursday afternoon. The Cougars will take on Herkimer County Community College in the opening-round at Ocean County Community College in Toms River, NJ.
The No. 2 nationally-ranked Cougars won the Region III Group B title to qualify for the national tournament and are currently on a six-game winning streak.
No. 4 Herkimer County earned its nationals bid by winning the Region III Group A title and the Generals are winners of nine out of their last 10 games.
Last time out:
Genesee (15-3) defeated SUNY Broome 2-0 to win the Region III Group B championship on Nov. 1. Kayla Doyle and Ashley Makowski recorded the GCC goals and the Cougars' defense held the Hornets to just three shots in the game.
Herkimer (13-2) dropped Hudson Valley CC 2-0 in the Region III Group A finals on Nov. 1. Danielle Nicosia and Nicole Dollen scored the HCCC goals and Sydney Stanley made four saves in net to preserve the shutout.
What to watch for:
Genesee leads the season series vs. Herkimer, 1-0. The Cougars shut out the Generals at home on Oct. 18, 4-0.
The pairing of GCC and the HCCC is the only quarter-finals matchup between two teams that have played each other this season.
GCC's last national tournament appearance came in 2010 when it finished runner-up, falling in the title game.
Start time is set for 3:30pm on Thursday at Ocean County Community College in Toms River, NJ.
