Cougars Claim Regional Crown; Qualify for National Tournament

For the first time since 2010, the Genesee Community College women's soccer team is headed to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament.

The third-ranked Cougars and the No. 2 seed in the NJCAA Region III Tournament claimed the Group B title on Saturday morning, dropping the No. 3 seed- Broome Community College, 2-0.

The Cougars put two early shots on the BCC net, but were held scoreless at the start.

Genesee broke through in the 10th minute when Kayla Doyle struck, netting her second goal of the tournament to put GCC in front 1-0. Kathryn Springsteen earned the assist.

It was another solid defensive effort by the Genesee, which limited Broome to very few chances and only three shots during the match.

A back and forth battle for possession kept it a 1-0 game until the 80th minute. After BCC was assessed a yellow card, Ashley Makowski blasted the ensuing free-kick just under the crossbar and into the net to give GCC a 2-0 lead. It was Makowski's' third goal of the tournament.

The two-goal lead held as the Cougars wasted the final 10-minutes of the game, claiming their first regional title since 2010.

Doyle was named the Region III Tournament Most Valuable Player and Makowski and Sarah Loranty were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Genesee will now move on to the NJCAA National Tournament which will be held Nov. 13-16 in Toms River, NJ at host site- Oceans County Community College. The Cougars will take on Herkimer County Community College in the first round on Nov. 13 at 3:30 P.M.
