Women's Soccer Rolls to Season-Opening Victory

The No. 10 Genesee Community College women's soccer team cruised to a season-opening victory against Mercyhurst North East on Tuesday night, earning the victory in shutout fashion with a 6-0 win over the visiting Saints.

The host team overcame a slow start and grabbed the lead in the 23rd minute when Taylor Miller tallied the game's first goal off of an assist from Ashley Makowski.

The Cougars wasted little time to increase their lead as Kayla Doyle netted her first career goal at GCC less than a minute later to give Genesee a 2-0 advantage.

Doyle made it 3-0 in the 56th minute and scored her third goal of the game in the 62nd minute, completing the hat-trick and staking the Cougars a 4-0 lead.

GCC controlled possession for the majority of the second half and took a 5-0 lead in the 82nd minute after Marilyn Leto beat the Saints keeper. Just over a minute later, Nikki Mauro ended the scoring with her first goal of the season to give GCC a 6-0 advantage.

Genesee out-shot Mercyhurst North East 28-5 on the night and GCC goalkeeper Maddie Potter made three saves to earn her first shutout and win of the fall.

Genesee (1-0) will return to action tomorrow on the road at Broome Community College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
