The No. 10 Genesee Community College women's soccer team cruised to a season-opening victory against Mercyhurst North East on Tuesday night, earning the victory in shutout fashion with a 6-0 win over the visiting Saints.
The Cougars wasted little time to increase their lead as Kayla Doyle netted her first career goal at GCC less than a minute later to give Genesee a 2-0 advantage.
Doyle made it 3-0 in the 56th minute and scored her third goal of the game in the 62nd minute, completing the hat-trick and staking the Cougars a 4-0 lead.
GCC controlled possession for the majority of the second half and took a 5-0 lead in the 82nd minute after Marilyn Leto beat the Saints keeper. Just over a minute later, Nikki Mauro ended the scoring with her first goal of the season to give GCC a 6-0 advantage.
Genesee out-shot Mercyhurst North East 28-5 on the night and GCC goalkeeper Maddie Potter made three saves to earn her first shutout and win of the fall.
Genesee (1-0) will return to action tomorrow on the road at Broome Community College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
