Cougars Come up Short Against Niagara

The GCC women's basketball team dropped its second straight game to start the second semester and fell to 5-9 on the season after losing to Niagara College (Ont.) at home on Sunday, 76-70.

Despite never leading in the game, the Cougars battled and kept it close throughout the afternoon.

Genesee shot better than 50-percent in the game, but turned the ball over 28 times leading to 26 Niagara points.

Lauren Watson scored 21 of her game high 26 points in the second half, connecting on three 3pt baskets.

Genesee trailed by 14 early in the second half, but cut the Knights lead down to three on multiple occasions, including getting to within 60-57 in the fourth quarter. Watson hit a three with just under five minutes to play, but after giving up a Niagara basket on the next possession, the Cougars gave up a 6-0 run and were outscored 16-13 to end the game.

Brionna Blocker tallied a 15 point 19 rebound double-double for GCC, Rosalyn Sealey reached double figures in scoring with 12 points, and also dished out four assists. Kelsey Scott-Avery added nine points and four boards and Pamela Crespo collected five rebounds and scored two points.

Genesee will return to action on the road on Tuesday at Cayuga CC. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
