The Genesee Community College women's basketball team will get the chance to make a run at a Region III Division II title beginning on Wednesday night when the Cougars travel to Mercyhurst North East for a sub-regional matchup. GCC, the No. 6 seed, will face MNE, the No. 3 seed, for the right to move on to this weekend's Region III Division II Final Four.
Genesee has fallen in its last seven contests and finished the regular season with a 6-21 overall record and was 2-8 in regional play.
Mercyhurst N.E. has won its last two and went 4-2 in the month of February. The Saints enter Wednesday night with an 8-12 overall record and 5-5 regional record.
LAST TIME OUT:
GCC lost its regular season finale at home against Herkimer College on Feb. 13, 66-55. Karley Fanning led all scorers for Genesee, scoring 24 points off the bench and also adding five assists. Thais Matté added nine points for GCC, Clarissa Walker grabbed 10 rebounds and scored eight points and Abagail Kamysz finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
MNE beat Jamestown CC on the road to end its regular season on Feb. 20, 70-54. Kayla Pound led three Saints in double figures, finishing with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Megan McKinney added 23 points and seven rebounds and Jaida Dixon ended with 15 points, seven rebounds and seven steals.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
- Wednesday night will mark the third meeting between the two schools this season. The series is tied 1-1 with each team winning at home
- Genesee had gone winless in eight straight tries before defeating Mercyhurst N.E. on Jan. 26
- GCC last captured the Region III Division II title in 2009-2010
