With just over eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter the GCC women's basketball team held a nine point lead over visiting Villa Maria College on Wednesday night, but the Cougars could not hold on and fell to the Vikings 78-72.
Thais Matté kept Genesee in the game in the first half with four 3-pt baskets and 12 points. GCC trailed by as much as 11 in the second quarter but cut the deficit to four at the half.
Karly Fanning scored 12 of her game-high 21 in the second half and gave the Cougars their first lead of the game at the 4:32 mark of the third quarter with a layup.
GCC built a 65-56 lead after a pair of free-throws from Clarissa Walker early in the fourth, but the Vikings ended the game on a 22-7 run to edge out the win.
Fanning also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and had seven assists, Matté finished with 20 points and seven assists, Walker recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds and Brionna Blocker ended the night with 10 points and six boards.
Genesee (2-8) will host its annual holiday tournament Dec. 12 and 13 and play Durham College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
