A slow start cost the GCC women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as the Cougars fell to visiting Lakeland CC, 75-70.
Genesee trailed by 16 after the first quarter and 17 at the break, but came back to get within five in the second half. The Cougars outscored the Lakers in both of the final two periods, but fell short to drop to 1-4 this season.
Karly Fanning led all scorers with 21 points and she also had five assists. Brionna Blocker added 16 points and eight rebounds, Clarissa Walker finished with 12 points and eight boards, Abagail Kamysz had 11 points and Thais Matté finished with 10.
GCC forced 23 Lakeland turnovers, but committed 23 of its own and shot just 2-16 from three-point range.
Genesee's next game comes at home on Dec. 1 against Finger Lakes CC. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm.
