The GCC softball team snapped a seven-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon, losing in both games of a doubleheader to Corning CC. The Cougars dropped game one 5-2 and fell in game two 10-3.
Corning grabbed a 3-0 lead early in game one and the first six GCC batters were retired before Dani Wilshire doubled in the third.
Shannon Baker got the Cougars on the board with a solo home run in the fourth to cut the CCC lead down to 3-1, but the next eight GCC batters went down in order and it remained a 3-1 game through six innings.
The Red Barons scored twice in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 5-2 before GCC came to bat in the bottom of the inning. Baker reached with a leadoff single and scored on a Cassandra Pangrazio RBI single, but the rally fell short and GCC fell in game one.
Baker helped put GCC in front in the third inning of game two with an RBI double and the Cougars ended the inning with three runs to take a 3-0 lead.
Corning, the home team in the second game, responded with seven runs in the bottom of the third to take a lead they would not give up, as Genesee managed just two hits the rest of the way. The Red Barons added three more runs in the sixth.
Genesee (15-15) will now move on to the Region III tournament, which begins on May 10. Opening round matchup and game time/location to be announced.
