Genesee Falls to Richland in National Semifinals

HERKIMER: Friday marked the end of the 2016 season for the GCC men's soccer team after the Cougars lost in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national semifinals to Richland (TX) 3-0.

The fifth seeded Cougars made their second-even appearance in the national final four, but were shut out for the first time all season.

For the second night in a row, GCC played to a scoreless first half. The Cougars were out-shot 7-2 in the opening frame and 14-4 in the game, but played well defensively to keep Richland off the board during the first 45 minutes.

Richland, the number one seed and number one nationally ranked team in the country, took the lead with the game's first goal in the 57th minute, a tally off of a header that would prove to be the game-winner.

The Thunderducks scored again just six minutes later to take a 2-0 lead and then added the game's final goal in the 68th minute to extend their lead to three.

GCC sent all four of its shots in the game on target but could not find the back of the net. Rafael Godoi put two shots on goal and John Reed and Samuel King had one apiece.

David Ormiston made three saves in net during all 90 minutes of work for the Cougars.

Genesee's title hopes end after a 15-2-2 season and the Cougars will play Herkimer College in the third place consolation game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
