The No. 1 nationally-ranked GCC men’s soccer team will begin its run at a national championship on Thursday afternoon when the overall number one seed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament takes on No. 8 seed Bunker Hill CC (MA) in the quarterfinals at Wehrum Stadium.
Genesee (19-0) captured its second regional title in school history on Oct. 31 to advance to its second ever national tournament. The Cougars defeated Niagara County CC 8-0 to win the District A championship.
Bunker Hill (14-7) won the Region 21 title after beating Holyoke CC 4-1 on Nov. 1. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA National Poll.
GCC and BHCC will play in the second of four scheduled games to open the three-day tournament on Thursday.
What to watch for:
- Genesee is 1-0 all time in the NJCAA National Quarterfinals
- GCC’s last national tournament appearance came in 2011 when the Cougars reached the national championship match
- Genesee holds the longest active winning streak in the country at 19 games
