HERKIMER, NY: The No. 1 nationally-ranked GCC men's soccer team captured its second Region III championship in school history on Saturday afternoon and will advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament after defeating Niagara County CC 8-0.
Godoi found the back of the net again in the 19th minute to give the Cougars a three-goal lead and tied the NJCAA record for most goals by a team in a single season with 134.
William Stone broke the record with his first of two goals in the opening half in the 29th minute and Joao Falco followed cashing in on a pass from Austin Richardson in the 36th minute to put Genesee on top 5-0.
Stone scored again in the 40th minute and with just .9 seconds left in the half, Dean Byrne tapped in a rebound to send the Cougars into the break with a 7-0 lead.
The Genesee defense held strong and did not allow a shot on goal in the first half. The Thunderwolves managed just one shot on net in the match.
Darius Johnson scored the final goal of the game in the second half, scoring in the 77th minute. The Cougars ended the game with 22 shots on goal.
Stone was named the tournament MVP and Ricard Fernandez-Sarro and Godoi were named to the all-tournament team. Head coach Ken Gavin was named the Region III Coach of the Year.
Genesee will now move on to the NJCAA National Tournament for the second time in school history. The tournament will run Nov. 12-15 at host site Herkimer College.
