Saturday will mark the fifth straight season in which the Genesee Community College men's soccer team will play for a Region III championship. The tournament's top seed will take on No. 12-seed Niagara County CC at 3pm at Herkimer College for the Region III-A title.
Also the No. 1 nationally-ranked team in the country, GCC enters Saturday's match with an 18-0 record and advanced to the finals after an 8-0 win in the semifinals over No. 8-seed Mohawk Valley CC on Oct. 27.
The Thunderwolves (7-12-1) were given new life after Hudson Valley CC was forced to forfeit its sub-regionals win and NCCC took advantage, upsetting No. 5 Broome CC in penalty kicks in the semifinals on Oct. 28, 5-4 (F/PK).
Genesee defeated Niagara 5-1 at NCCC in the only meeting between the two schools this season on Sept. 19. Austin Richardson, Jake Miller, Mitchell Robinson and William Stone accounted for the GCC goals. Richardson scored twice.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
Genesee is just three goals away from tying the all-time National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) record for goals scored in a single season (134).
GCC is seeking its second Region III championship and first since 2011.
Saturday's winner will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament, which will run Nov. 12-15 at host site Herkimer College.
