The Genesee Community College men's soccer team is the new No. 1 ranked team in the country according to the latest National Poll released by the National Junior College Athletic Association on Oct. 6. Genesee overtakes Richland College (TX), which held the top spot for the past five weeks and is now ranked No. 3.
Genesee has played to a 13-0 record so far this fall and the Cougars are coming off a 6-1 road win at No. 8 SUNY Adirondack on Oct. 5. The win was the 100th career victory at Genesee for head coach Ken Gavin.
The Cougars lead the country in goals scored with 95, a total that is 22 more than the next closest team. GCC averages better than seven goals per game and hold opponents to less than one.
Genesee has earned the No. 1 ranking for the third time in school history. The Cougars previously claimed the top spot in 2011 and 2012. The College's last NJCAA National Tournament appearance came in 2011 when the Cougars reached the national championship game.
GCC will host its final regular season home game tomorrow against Jamestown CC at 6 p.m. before heading on the road for three straight matches. For results and updates, including potential home playoff dates, visit www.geneseeathletics.com
