The Genesee Community College men's soccer team was selected as the number four seed in this year's Region III Division III Men's Soccer Championships and will play at home in the semifinals round next Tuesday.
The Cougars finished the regular season 9-7 and will match up with the fifth-seeded Panthers from Tompkins-Cortland Community College on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the semifinals. Both teams received a first-round bye.
After starting the season 0-5, Genesee bounced back and put together a five-game winning streak during the fall. The streak was broken in the final game of the regular season when GCC fell to No. 1 Herkimer County Community College, 4-0.
Freshman Ikuma Hirano leads GCC in goals (10), assists (6) and points (26) this season. Freshman goalkeeper Connor Halstead has recorded four shutout wins this year and has a save percentage of better than 83%.
The Cougars won the season series against the Panthers, defeating them 1-0 at home on Sep. 13.
