No. 4 Cougars on to Regional Finals; Punch Ticket to National Tournament

SYRACUSE, NY: The No. 4 nationally ranked GCC men's lacrosse team advanced to Sunday afternoon's Region III Finals after a 20-4 win over Monroe CC on Saturday in the semifinals at host site Onondaga CC. With the win, the Cougars also punched their ticket to the NJCAA National Tournament.

Pat Van Bortle put Genesee in front 1-0 less than a minute in with his first of four goals on the afternoon. The Cougars led 4-0 after the first quarter.

GCC goalie Darin Eakins held MCC scoreless throughout the first half and allowed just a single goal in the third quarter and three in the fourth. He made nine saves in the game.

Davis Prince led the offense with seven points, scoring four goals and assisting on three. Van Bortle finished with four goals and two assists, John Jimerson added two goals and an assist and Nick Lavoy, Dan Telban and JoVanni Klimowicz each scored two goals apiece.

Bailey Skye led the defense with three caused turnovers and Jake Wittmeyer and Reed Hnidy each collected six ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Mike Caternolo was 19 for 24 on face-offs and led GCC with 10 ground balls.

Genesee (12-3) will play No. 2 nationally ranked Onondaga CC on Sunday at 1 p.m. at OCC in the regional finals. Onondaga defeated Finger Lakes CC 32-6 in its semifinals matchup on Saturday and the Lazers lead the season series 1-0 against GCC after a 15-10 win over the Cougars on Mar. 26.
