The No. 4 GCC men's lacrosse team jumped out to a fast start at No. 9 Monroe CC on Wednesday afternoon and never looked back, dropping the Tribunes 16-7 to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Mike Caternolo, who was 22 of 27 on face-offs in the game, set the school record for most ground balls in a game by collecting 18.
The Cougars went in front 8-1 after the first quarter and held MCC to just three first half goals. GCC led 10-3 at the break.
Genesee outscored Monroe 4-3 in the third quarter and 2-1 in the final period.
Pat Van Bortle led the offense with four goals and two assists, Jacob Bomberry and Brody Jorgenson each scored twice and had two assists and Evan Jacob and Sherman Williams each added two goals apiece. John Jimerson and Davis Prince added a goal and assist each and Nick Lavoy and Jonah Mohawk each scored once.
Reed Hnidy led the defense with eight ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Genesee (3-1, 1-0) will play its home opener on Saturday against SUNY Delhi. Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
