The No. 4 GCC men's lacrosse team took No. 2 CCBC-Essex (Md.) into overtime on the road on Saturday afternoon but could not hold off the home team falling 11-10 after the extra session.
The Cougars fell behind by three goals after the first quarter and trailed 5-1 in the second before mounting a comeback. John Jimerson and Brody Jorgenson found the back of the net in succession to end the first half to cut the deficit to two at the break.
Both teams tallied a goal apiece in the third quarter and after the Knights added one early in the fourth, Genesee found itself down 7-4. The Cougars answered to get back within two, but with six minutes left in regulation, CCBC-Essex retook a three-goal lead at 9-6.
Pat Van Bortle scored to make it a 9-7 game and Jacob Bomberry cut it to one just 20 seconds later. Essex then took a 10-8 lead with under two minutes remaining, but with three straight face-off wins by Mike Caternolo, Bomberry and Van Bortle each scored again to tie it at 10 and send it in to overtime.
GCC had the first chance in the extra period but could not convert, allowing the Knights to clear and eventually convert the game-winner less than a minute later.
Van Bortle finished the game with three goals and an assist to lead the offense. Bomberry and Jorgenson each finished with two goals apiece, Jimerson and Davis Prince each recorded a goal and an assist and Jonah Mohawk added a goal.
Caternolo led the Cougars with six ground balls and Darin Eakins made 12 saves in net.
Genesee falls to 2-1 on the season and will travel to No. 9 Monroe CC on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. face-off.
