Men's LAX falls to Onondaga in Regional Semis

The No. 4 Genesee Community College men's lacrosse team could not get past No. 1 Onondaga Community College on Saturday afternoon, falling in the semifinals of the Region III playoffs, 18-6.

The Cougars took the lead with a man advantage when Dana Ray scored to make it 1-0 GCC. The Lazers responded after returning to full strength to tie it at one less than a minute later, but Doug Ellsworth put Genesee back in front with an unassisted goal to make it 2-1 early in the first quarter.

OCC then scored two straight and held a 3-2 lead after one.

Both teams traded a goal to begin the second quarter before Onondaga rattled off five in a row to take a 9-3 lead. GCC ended the half scoring the final two goals, one from Jimmy Smith and one from Ray, and trailed 9-5 at the half.

OCC opened things up in the third quarter and outscored GCC 8-0 to take control. Both teams managed only one fourth quarter goal and Onondaga defeated Genesee for the second time this season.

Craig Seneca ended the afternoon with 26 saves in net for GCC. Ray finished with two goals, Tyler Skowronski added two assists and Mitchel Kinney and Joshua Wester each added a goal.

Johnny Astrologo had five takeaways and four ground balls and Merek Regan and Jesse Jimerson each collected four ground balls.

Genesee ends the season 6-9 and will await the possibility of an at-large bid for the NJCAA National Tournament.
