Cougars Meet Tribunes in Regional Final Four on Saturday

For the third consecutive year, the GCC men's basketball team has advanced to the Region III Division II Final Four. The No. 4 seeded Cougars will take on No. 1 seed Monroe CC on Saturday at noon in the first semifinals matchup of the weekend.

Genesee (20-9) won its sub-regional matchup over No. 5 seed Niagara County CC on Tuesday night to advance to the semifinals. The Cougars have reached 20 wins for the third consecutive season.

Monroe (21-4) is ranked No. 11 nationally and received a first-round bye after earning to top seed in the region. The Tribunes were 11-1 in regional play this season.

LAST TIME OUT:

Genesee led start to finish in its sub-regional matchup with Niagara County CC on Feb. 23 and beat the Thunderwolves 77-65. Terrence Brown led all scorers with 19 points and connected on both 3pt attempts he took in the game. The sophomore also grabbed eight rebounds. Devante Carolina scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds for GCC, Alex Morris added 13 points and seven boards, Amancho Adopo collected 10 rebounds and scored eight points and Anthony Williams ended the night with nine points and a game high seven assists.

Monroe dropped its regular season finale and its first regional/conference contest of the season on Feb. 20 to Niagara County CC, 88-83. Izaha Jackson led the Tribunes with 21 points, Damon Miraud added 19 points and grabbed 10 boards and ShaQuan Bretoux finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. The loss was MCC's first regular season regional/conference loss since Feb. 20, 2014 when the Tribunes fell to Genesee.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR:

  • Saturday will mark the third meeting between the two schools this season; Monroe leads the season series 2-0
  • Saturday's winner will advance to Sunday's title game against the winner of No. 2 Jamestown CC and No. 3 Erie CC
  •  Genesee is seeking back-to-back appearances in the regional title game for the first time since 2001-02, 2002-03
