Cougars Host Thunderwolves in Regional Tournament Opener

The GCC men's basketball team has been tabbed the No. 4 seed in this year's Region III Division II championships and will host No. 5 Niagara County Community College on Tuesday night in the opening, sub-regional round. Genesee put together a 19-9 overall record during the regular season and was 6-6 in regional play. The Thunderwolves, also 6-6 against regional opponents, played to a 17-11 regular season record. Tuesday night's winner will advance to this weekend's Region III Division II Final Four.  

Genesee was 2-3 in the month of February and will host a first round matchup for the second time in the last three seasons.

Niagara County will play its fifth road contest of the month and the Thunderwolves are 3-1 in their previous four.


Genesee ended its regular season with a 94-70 Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) win over Jamestown CC-Olean on Feb. 13. Six players posted double-figures in points for the Cougars, led by Lamel Faison who finished with 18 including five 3pt baskets. Devante Carolina added 16 points and five assists, Rahsaan Williams had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Tarik Allicock finished with 12 rebounds and 11 points, Terrence Brown chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds and Anthony Williams added 10 points and four assists.

Niagara County snapped a two game losing skid and handed Monroe CC its first regional/conference loss of the season on Feb. 20, downing the Tribunes 88-83. Kyle Williams scored a game high 34 points for the Thunderwolves and also collected 10 rebounds. Francisco Williams and Mike McQuillen each added 13 points and NCCC was plus-10 in rebounding against MCC.


  • Tuesday night will be the third meeting of the season between Genesee and Niagara County. The season series is even at 1-1 with each team winning at home 
  • Genesee is seeking its third straight appearance in the Region III Division II Final Four 
  • The Cougars are 11-2 at home this season 
  • Tuesday night's winner will advance to play Monroe CC on Saturday at noon at MCC
