In an effort to avenge an earlier-season loss, the Genesee Community College men's basketball team took No. 6 nationally-ranked Monroe CC to the wire on Wednesday night, but the Tribunes managed to escape with a one-point, 64-63 win.
There were eight ties and 12 lead changes in the game, and neither team held a lead larger than seven. Both teams shot better than 51-percent in the first half, but GCC failed to continue its hot shooting in the second.
Lamel Faison hit one-of-two free-throws with 6:58 to play in the game to put Genesee up 56-52. However, the Cougars went just 3-11 the rest of the way and shot only a tad better than 24-percent in the second half, including 1-9 from three-point range. The Tribunes closed the game on a 12-7 run to sneak away with the win.
Rahsaan Williams scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Genesee, which held a slim 37-36 advantage in rebounding. Terrence Brown finished with 13 points, Devante Carolina added 10 points and two steals, Alex Morris ended the night with nine points, five rebounds and five assists and Anthony Williams chipped in eight points and six assists.
Genesee falls to 17-7 overall and 4-4 in Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) play. The Cougars will return to action on Saturday at Mercyhurst North East. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
