The No. 14 nationally-ranked GCC men's basketball team overcame a slow shooting day to put away No. 8 (Division III) Herkimer College on Thursday afternoon, 61-56.
Genesee shot just 29-percent from the floor on the afternoon but did just enough to earn the win, pulling away late and converting six-of-six free-throws in the last 40-seconds.
Herkimer hit seven 3pt-baskets in the first half to keep the game close and both teams went into the locker room tied at 33 at the half.
Devante Carolina hit back-to-back threes to start the second half and put the Cougars in front 39-33 less than a minute in.
GCC went just 5-31 the rest of the second half and trailed 50-45 with just over eight minutes to play, but ended the game on a 16-6 run to pick up its 12th victory of the season.
Anthony Williams finished with a game-high 18 points and also had five assists. Alex Morris added 15 points off the bench, Carolina finished with 11, Terrence Brown chipped in seven points and six rebounds and Rahsaan Williams and Tarik Allicock grabbed eight rebounds apiece.
Genesee (12-2) will travel to the Community College of Rhode island tournament this weekend and face Monroe College (Bronx) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
