The No. 18 nationally-ranked GCC men's basketball team escaped with an 88-81 win against visiting Villa Maria College on Wednesday night to move to 6-1 on the season.
Genesee defeated Villa Maria 100-65 in the first meeting between the two schools on Nov. 4, but needed all 40 minutes on Wednesday night to take care of the Vikings.
Villa Maria went 6-11 from three-point range in the first half and converted 50-percent of its shot from the floor to keep pace with the Cougars.
Terrence Brown scored 13 points in the second half and led Genesee with 19 in the game on seven of 10 shooting. He also collected 11 rebounds.
GCC held an 80-79 lead with just over 1:30 to play in the game and after an Anthony Williams basket extended the Cougars' lead to three, Genesee hit six of eight free-throws down the stretch to hold off Villa Maria.
Alex Morris also scored 13 points in the second half and finished with 14 in the game. Devante Carolina ended the night with 18 points, Didier Antoine added 10 points and seven rebounds, Jordan Coleson chipped in seven points and Lamel Faison had five points and five assists.
Genesee will host its annual holiday tournament Dec. 12 and 13 and host the Community College of Rhode Island on Saturday at 7 p.m.
