Cougars Fall Short to Schoolcraft in NJCAA Opening Round

DANVILLE, IL: The Genesee Community College men's basketball team fell to No. 1 Schoolcraft College in the opening round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament on Tuesday night, 79-69, eliminating the Cougars from national title contention.

GCC shook off a slow start to stay within reach during the opening half. After falling behind by 12, the Cougars made a late run to cut the Ocelots lead down to four at the break.

Ervin Mitchell scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half and got Genesee to within one at 49-48 with a layup with 12-minutes left to play.

Mitchell tied the game at 64 apiece with a layup with 6:10 remaining before Jason Perry Murray gave the Cougars their first lead of the game with a tip-in off of a missed shot to put GCC in front 66-65.

It was the only lead of the night for GCC, however, as the Ocelots ended the game on a 14-3 run to advance to the second round on Thursday.

Naquil Jones finished with 26 point and three assists, Perry Murray grabbed 11 rebounds, Didier Antoine had eight rebounds and Joshua Doughty scored six points and collected five boards.

Genesee will continue on in the consolation bracket and play the loser of Olive Harvey and John Wood on Thursday at 11:30am CST.
