Cougars Prepare for Regional Final Four

After a 20-win regular season, the Genesee Community College men's basketball team will represent the No. 2 seed in the Region III Division II playoffs and with it, the Cougars earn a first-round bye into this weekend's Final Four which will be held at Monroe Community College. GCC will await the winner of No. 3 Niagara County Community College and No. 6 Mercyhurst North East. Both teams will play on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. at NCCC.

Genesee (20-8) held the No. 4 spot in the Region III standings after its regular season schedule concluded, but losses by Erie Community College and NCCC down the stretch bumped GCC up to No. 2. The Cougars will play either MNE or NCCC for the third time this season, splitting the season series with both teams, 1-1.

GCC will make a regional Final Four appearance for the second time in as many seasons, losing in the championship game last year to MCC. Genesee has not won a regional title since the 2002-03 season, also its last appearance in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament.

Monroe (24-4) put together a perfect 12-0 record in regional play this season and the Tribunes are the No. 1 seed. They will play the winner of No. 4 Erie and No. 6 Jamestown Community College, a quarterfinals matchup that will take place at ECC on Tuesday night.

Saturday's schedule will match MCC and the Erie/Jamestown winner at 5 p.m. and GCC and the Niagara/Mercyhurst winner at 7 p.m. The championship game will take place on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

*Game note: Ervin Mitchell is just 18 points shy of breaking the school record for most career points, a mark currently held by Cougars' head coach Terry George (1374 points).
