Three members of the Genesee Community College men's basketball team were recently named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Region III All-Region team.
Freshman forward Ervin Mitchell was named to the All-Region First Team, freshman forward Naquil Jones was named to the All-Region Second Team and sophomore forward Alastair Cole was named to the All-Region Third Team.
Mitchell made 30 starts and appeared in all 31 games this season for the Cougars. He averaged a team-leading 23.3 points per game, the 12th highest scoring average in all of Division II men's basketball. He scored 30 or more points on four occasions this season and scored 20 or more in 23 contests, including eight in a row to start the year.
He also collected a team-leading 8.4 rebounds per game and recorded double-digit points and rebounds in seven games. He held a shooting percentage of 57.8, the second-highest percentage on the team.
Jones started 29 games and appeared in all 31 contests this year for the Cougars. He averaged 22.2 points per game, which was second best on the team and 18th highest in all of Division II men's basketball.
On five occasions this season, Jones recorded double-digit points and double-digit rebounds. He was tied for second on the team in rebounding, collecting an average of 6.3 rebounds per game.
Cole was the only member of the team to start all 31 games this season. He was third on the team in scoring averaging, recording 11.7 points per game. He recorded a season-high 23 points against Lakeland Community College on Nov. 12 and scored 20 or more points on three occasions this year.
Genesee finished the year with a 23-8 overall record and advanced to the Division II Region III Finals. The win total was the highest since the 2003-04 season and the Cougars were ranked as high as no. 18 in the NJCAA National Poll this year.
