Genesee Athletics Announces 2013-2014 Award Winners

The Genesee Community College Athletics department recently celebrated the success of its student-athletes both in his or her sport and in the classroom, announcing the award winners for the 2013-14 year at the first annual GCC Athletics Banquet.

"It is very important to congratulate our student-athletes that have accomplished great things throughout the year," said GCC Athletics Director Kristen Schuth. "It's also important to honor those students that are moving on and graduating from our program."

The Athletics Director Award was presented to sophomores Adam Baumeister (golf) and Michelle Nagle (volleyball). The award is given to a male and female student-athlete who are in good academic standing, have made a significant contribution to GCC Athletics and have achieved significant athletic recognition during their career, such as being recognized by local, regional and/or national organizations as an individual of exceptional athletic ability (All-Conference, All-Region, All-American, etc.).

Baumeister, a two-year member of the GCC golf team, was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III All-Region Team last year as a freshman. He has medaled three times so far this spring as a sophomore and has not finished lower than eighth in any tournament in 2014. The Cougars will compete in the Region III Championships May 12-13 and the NJCAA National Championships will be held on June 1-6 at the Chautauqua golf club.

Nagle, a captain and two-year starter for the GCC volleyball team, was named the Division II Region III and Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) Player of the Year for the 2013 season. She tallied 472 kills and accounted for and average of over four points per sets, appearing in all 43 matches for GCC last fall. She was also named to the WNYAC tournament and Region III tournament All-Tournament teams.

Receiving the Scholar Athlete Award were sophomores Chelsea Gerace (volleyball) and Dave and Doug Ellsworth (men's lacrosse). The award is given to a male and female athlete who has achieved athletic recognition and has an outstanding academic record with a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Gerace, a Physical Therapy major, achieved a 4.0 GPA this past season and holds an overall GPA of 3.96 with 87 credit hours. She was a pivotal member of the GCC volleyball team last fall as the starting libero. Gerace currently maintains a fulltime job, volunteers at Batavia High School as a track coach and works fund raisers for her local church.

Dave and Doug Ellsworth were both two-year members of the men's lacrosse team as two-way midfielders. Dave achieved a 3.88 GPA with 51 credits earned and Doug achieved a 3.85 GPA with 51 credits earned. Both were named to the WNYAC All-Conference First Team this spring.

Michelle Peck, Health and Physical Education and Athletics secretary, was awarded the Athletic Service Award. The award is given to an individual who has made a significant contribution in support of the athletics department during the course of the year.

"Michelle Peck has been the glue that keeps us all together for the past seven years," Schuth said. "In my first year as the Athletics Director, I could not have asked for a better secretary."
