The GCC baseball team entered Thursday afternoon's doubleheader with Finger Lakes CC as winners of seven out of its last nine contests. The Cougars earned a split with the Lakers in a doubleheader on Tuesday at FLCC, but could not get past the visitors on Thursday, falling in both games at GCC.
Finger Lakes won a slugfest in game one 15-12, and both teams combined for 40 hits.
Brandon Stephens left the park three times in game one, hitting two-run home runs in the 3rd, 5th and 6th innings. He finished the game 3 for 5 with six runs batted in.
FLCC led 9-6 after four, and added three in the fifth and three in the sixth to hold off Stephens and the Cougars.
Genesee starter Chris Ossa only lasted two innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits. The bullpen combined to throw five innings and allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits.
Joseph DeFelice collected four hits at the plate for GCC and drove in three runs, including an RBI single that got the Cougars to within three in the bottom of the fifth. Earl Blackmon went 3 for 4 with an RBI and scored a pair of runs, Jardorick Woods added a hit and scored three runs and Terrence-John Garcia drove in a run with an RBI single.
The bats gave Genesee starting pitcher Connor Barleben a 2-0 lead after one in game two. Barleben helped his own cause by driving in Blackmon with an RBI single and Casey Guary then plated Barleben with a run-scoring double.
Barleben ran into a bit of trouble in the third, facing a bases loaded situation twice in the inning, but escaped after allowing just one run.
It was a 2-1 game in the seventh before FLCC took advantage of a couple of fielding errors and scored three runs to grab a 4-2 lead.
The Cougars brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but could not cash in and fell by a final of 4-2.
Barleben put together a complete-game effort, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five.
Guary went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Woods and Henry DelGado each delivered a base hit.
Genesee (12-29) will travel to SUNY Broome for a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
