Genesee Sweeps Corning in Doubleheader

The GCC baseball team swept a Thursday afternoon doubleheader against visiting Corning CC after splitting with the Red Barons on the road on Tuesday. The Cougars won game one 10-5 and took game two in five innings, 12-2.

Earl Blackmon delivered three hits in the opener, scored twice and drove in one. Brandon Stephens went 2 for 2 and collected two runs batted in.

Thomas Pauly earned the win on the mound, firing five innings of four-hit ball while striking out two. He allowed three runs to Corning before giving way to Josh Porter, who threw the final two innings, allowing two runs on five his while striking out two.

Genesee took the lead for good in the bottom of the second when the Cougars scored three runs to take a 3-0 lead. Casey Guary drove in the game's first run with an RBI single. The home team added two more in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Connor Barleben and Terrence-John Garcia both had a hit and an RBI for GCC to help lift the Cougars to a win in game one.

Barleben got the start on the hill in game two. He lasted four innings, allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out five Red Barons.

GCC took control of the nightcap in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs to grab a 9-2 lead. Blackmon sparked the inning with a triple and scored after a throwing error. Joseph DeFelice and Barleben also had a hit and an RBI apiece in the inning.

Taheed Foy pitched a clean fifth inning for Genesee before the Cougars ended the game in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs to win via the mercy rule.

Genesee (8-25) will return to action at home on Sunday when the Cougars host Jamestown CC in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
