For the second time in a week, the Genesee Community College baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Monroe Community College. Coming off of two wins over the Tribunes on Thurdsay, the Cougars continued rolling on Saturday and won a 7-5 decision in game one and took game two, 6-2.
Meruentney Lourens overcame early control issues in game one to throw six innings of three-hit ball to earn the win on the mound. Lourens allowed four runs and struck out six.
Both teams scored a run in the first before GCC took the lead for good in the second. The Cougars added runs in the third, fourth and fifth and held a 7-1 lead going into the sixth.
The Tribunes got to within 7-2 with a run in the top of the sixth and loaded the bases, scoring three runs in the seventh before David Clark closed the door, inducing a groundout to end the game.
In game two, Lozada and Carrera both went deep and Genesee never trailed in the game.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after Carrera's home run and Clark held the Tribunes in check, throwing 6.2 innings on the mound allowing two runs (one earned) on just three hits while striking out three.
Phillie Guzman drove in a run and went 2-3 at the plate, Lozada and Carrerra both drove in two runs and tallied two hits and Bobby Colanturono scored two runs and added a hit.
With the wins, Genesee evens its Western New York Athletic Conference (WNYAC) record to 4-4 on the season.
