Genesee Community College's athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 24 are Tommi Rutherford (Warsaw, NY) from the women's volleyball team and Billy Murphy (London, England) from the men's soccer team.
The volleyball sophomore captain recorded a career-high 37 digs this past weekend against No. 9 Erie and finished the week with 70 against four opponents – three of which appear in the current national rankings list. Tommi had at least a pair of aces in three of the four matches that brought her team-leading total to 21; good enough to be in Region III's top-20. Her serving ability accounted for service runs of five points or better on four occasions last week, and when she's not scoring via serve she is preventing the other teams from doing so with 98 of 104 service returns as the team's libero.
The second-year men's soccer team standout was just one of three Cougars to find the scoresheet in both Cougar wins last week that extended the team's winning streak to six games. Genesee opened the week against a team that had just one loss and a better winning percentage on the season than the No. 5 Cougars. Trailing by a goal in the latter part of the second, Billy set up the tying goal that allowed the Cougars to take the game to overtime and win 2-1 in double-overtime. Billy followed that performance with a pair of goals against Hudson Valley with one coming off a penalty kick.
