The Genesee Community College Athletes of the Week are Hijiri Sano and Sha-Ony Obispa. Sano led the men's soccer team to a 2-0 record and a No. 7 national ranking, while Obispa kept the Cougars at 2-2 last week with the team's only losses to a pair of opponents that are currently a combined 16-0 on the season.
Hijiri was a part of two Genesee Community College records last week in a game against Niagara. First, the Japan native tied a single game record for goals at five and then helped his team set a single game team record for goals at 21. The freshman had an 11-point outing by adding an assist and got his first two goals in a 90-second span in the opening three minutes of the contest that included the game winner. Hijiri would score all five goals in under a 30-minute span of the first half and help his team climb in the national rankings to No. 7.His record-tying five-goal game helped move Hijiri into a tie for eighth in Region III goal scoring.
Sha-Ony helped the Genesee volleyball team to a 2-1 record in pod play last weekend. In a tough five-set win against Jefferson, Sha-Ony led the team with a team-high 20.5 points, 13 kills and seven aces and also finished second on the team in digs with 11. Against Onondaga, the freshman had a team-high six kills with a .500 hitting percentage to go with an ace and three digs. Her performance moved her into the top-10 in Region III hitting percentage and aces and she is also either first or second in six different team categories.
