Doyle and Balarabe Chosen as Athletes of the Week

Genesee Community College women's soccer forward Kayla Doyle and men's soccer defender Habib Balarabe were named the Female and Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 3.

Doyle was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2014 Region III Women's Soccer Championships, helping the GCC women's soccer team to its first regional title since 2010.

She scored a goal and added an assist in a semifinals win against Mohawk Valley Community College and scored the first goal in a 2-0 win in the championship game against Broome Community College.

The Cougars have qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament and will play Herkimer County Community College in the first round on Nov. 13.

Balarabe helped the GCC men's soccer team reach the Region III Men's Soccer Championships finals, playing well defensively for the Cougars.

He was named to the All-Tournament team, helping GCC shut out Tompkins-Cortland Community College in the semifinals and holding Herkimer County Community College to two goals in the championship game.

The Cougars finished the season with a 10-8 overall record and reached the Region III finals for the fourth consecutive season.
